Description
A rich and creamy Hungarian dish, Chicken Paprikash is made with tender chicken simmered in a flavorful paprika-infused sauce. Perfect for a cozy family dinner, this traditional comfort food is best served over egg noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes.

- 2 lbs bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs and drumsticks
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
- 1 tbsp tomato paste or 1 medium tomato, diced
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley for garnish
- Egg noodles or rice for serving
Instructions
Step 1: Sauté the Onions
- Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat.
- Add chopped onions and cook until soft and golden, about 5-7 minutes.
Step 2: Add Paprika & Garlic
- Remove the pan from heat and stir in Hungarian sweet paprika to prevent burning.
- Add minced garlic and stir for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Step 3: Cook the Chicken
- Season chicken pieces with salt and pepper and add them to the pan.
- Brown on all sides for about 5 minutes per side.
Step 4: Simmer with Tomatoes & Broth
- Stir in diced tomatoes or tomato paste and pour in chicken broth.
- Cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes until the chicken is tender.
Step 5: Finish with Sour Cream
- Remove about ½ cup of the sauce and mix it with sour cream in a bowl.
- Stir the mixture back into the pan and simmer for another 5 minutes.
Notes
- For a lighter version, substitute sour cream with Greek yogurt.
- Smoked paprika can be used for a deeper, smokier flavor.
- Serve with buttered egg noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes for a complete meal.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
